What to Bring Skiing as a Beginner

When headed out to ski for the first time, it is necessary to bring the appropriate gear, clothing, and equipment out to the slopes. Here are a few indispensable items when going to ski for the first time.

Ski clothing is important. For the beginner, ensure you bring enough layers of clothing to stay warm and dry while out on the slopes. Wear a comfortable and moisture-wicking base layer, middle insulating layers to keep you warm, and a shell-style jacket on top. Insulation is best left to the internal layers so that your top layer can serve as protection from any inclement weather.

One important tip is to never wear cotton clothing when out skiing. When your cotton clothing gets wet (whether from sweat or the snow), it will take a long time to dry out and lose its insulation properties.

In addition to bringing along additional warm layers, be sure to bring along water and snacks, ski gear like boots, poles, and the skis themselves, as well as a dry change of clothes for after your skiing adventure. If you don’t own your own gear, many ski slopes allow you to rent equipment from their facility. As a novice skier, remember that it can be extremely helpful to take a lesson from a professional before hitting the slopes.
